Review from Oblio

JIMMY STU LIVES! By Kent McDaniel. Penumbra Publishing. 2012. Cover by Joe Staton.

JimmyStuLives-cover700Jimmy Stu Sloan is a succesful preacher who has a thriving mega church and a loyal flock of believers. But all is not well with the reverend. He has health problems and isn’t as strong of a believer as most of his flock.

One night he surprises everyone by announcing because of his heart problems, he will have himself frozen so he can be awakened when a cure is available. It will also allow him to continue preaching the gospel in the future.

Well, Jimmy Stu achieves his cryogenic prophecy and finds himself alive in the future and off on a series of adventures not even he could have imagined.

Kent McDaniel weaves a strong story here. I like his set up and how he takes his main character off on a romp through the future. He is a fine writer, and what I like most about this book, the story moves a a good pace. McDaniel occasionally stops to wax poetic about the future and those living in it, but he always gets right back to the story.

Jimmy Stu Lives is a three layered novel. It is a science fiction story set up by the author who knows his sf; it is a spiritual story that combines religion with faith people find in each other; and, most of all, it is a personal journey of a man who is conflicted with a lot of things, but determined to be strong and follow his inner truth.

I like Jimmy Stu Sloan the man and I like Jimmy Stu, the book. It is not a novel that will make you reconsider your own life, but it will have you cheering for a man who wants to find his own.

Oblio is a Florida-based zine published by Gary Brown, a journalist at The Miami Herald and a long time science-fiction fan.
